The unwanted guest

The unwanted guest - Karen Parisi

After almost a week of nagging my husband regarding the “unwanted guest” situation, he finally decided to take measures. By the situation, I mean that we had an intruder in the house. As you have probably already guessed, I am talking about having a mouse visiting us once in a way.

Ten days ago, in the night, while I was watching a movie on my laptop, I saw something moving next to the wall. When I had a better look I realized that it was a mouse. I freaked out. I was so scared that I could not even scream. I hate mice! I lifted up my feet from the floor and stood up in the middle of the couch, terrified, watching the little intruder crossing the room.

It came from under the heater and it went towards the kitchen. As I was scared, I did not dare to follow it and see where was his next hiding spot. All I could think off was to call my husband, who was at one of his friends and ask him to come home immediately. All I had said to him that it was an emergency and I hang up. I knew that if I would have said anything about the mouse, he wouldn’t have come right away.

When he arrived, twenty minutes later, I was still in the middle of the couch. When he heard that I was freaked out about a tiny little mouse, he started to laugh. For him, it was not a big deal. He had lived on a farm during his childhood and he was used to seeing mice, whereas I wasn’t. I had lived all my life in the city. This was my first encounter with a living and breathing little mouse.

Seeing that I did not want to step off the couch, he promised me that he would check all of the heaters in the house the following day, in order to see where the intruder had entered. He walked me all the way upstairs to our bedroom. He reassured me that the mouse could not sneak into the bedroom.

Needless to say that it took him more than a week to get the heaters checked and cover all the holes with a mixtures of steel wool and caulking compound. He was too busy getting himself informed about the automated alarm system GTA that he wanted to purchase. Luckily, that I bought some Tomcat rat glue traps and placed them under the heaters throughout the house. This morning he found two mice trapped on the tape.
