Today, in the early hours of the morning my father in law passed away. I lost a family member and an amazing friend. I had never met anyone like him. One of a kind! During the night, his wife called on my phone saying something about him not feeling well.
Because I was not able to understand what she was telling me, I passed the phone to my husband. He spoke her language. I imagined something must have happened to him or her, otherwise she would not have called us at that hour. It must have been an emergency.
As I was waiting for hubby to finish the phone conversation and let me know what was going on, I had lots of scenarios passing through my mind. Sadly, all of them were about to come true.
Apparently his dad got a throat pain and applied some Vicks Vaporub on his chest and throat before going to sleep. Two hours later he woke up coughing and saying he was not able to breath well. His wife panicked and called us instead of dialing 911 directly.
The cough stayed for about ten minutes. She offered him some warm water and he felt better. When my husband asked to speak with him directly, she handed him the phone. He told his son he was able to breath better at that moment. He questioned him regarding this incident and he reassured him that he was fine. My husband insisted on having an ambulance coming over to his house, just to make sure everything was alright, but his dad refused.
He added there was no need, that he did not need anything, that it had passed. They ended their phone conversation on a merry tone, joking around as usual. Hubby had to cancel the ambulance who was already on the way.
In the morning, as soon as I woke up, I thought of my father in law. Two hours later when hubby called his dad’s number, the wife said he was still asleep. My husband and I had breakfast and then I looked online for a GTA car rental agency, as our trip was approaching.
One hour later we called him once more to check on him and he was still asleep. That’s when I sensed that he had passed away.
My dear father in law and friend had died in his sleep around 6 AM, after he had watched TV all night with his wife. They went to sleep and he never woke up.
